Volunteers are the heart and power of Mask Oakland. Please read this overview, and if interested, continue to our sign-up form below.

Volunteering Overview

Mask Oakland builds grassroots power to help our communities breathe.  Volunteers organize and distribute masks to communities in need and organizations that serve them, while educating the public on smoke pollution and related issues.

We are best known for getting respirator masks to unhoused people during wildfire smoke since 2017. COVID 19 multiplies the importance of this work.

There are increasing air, health, and climate crises. We come together to help our neighbors immediately as well as fight for a more just and sustainable world.

Mask Oakland is led by and empowers activists from oppressed communities.

Who we serve

We serve unhoused communities, many of whom are BIPOC, disabled, elders, and LGBTQI, as well as members of these groups in Oakland and beyond. We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and strongly encourage supporters from marginalized communities to join.

Values

We come from and strive to be in alignment with many movements, including climate justice, Black Lives Matter, housing justice, environmental justice, disability justice, queer and trans liberation, indigenous movements, workers’ movements and economic justice, and Black and trans-led feminism.
